Choosing the right furniture can be daunting, whether you are furnishing your very first place or have been a homeowner for decades. In addition to finding the right style to go with your decor, there are many other things to consider. The interior designers at Divine Interiors Group offer these tips to get you started.

Have a Budget

No matter how perfect a piece of furniture may look in your home, if it’s too expensive for you, don’t buy it. You don’t want to forego buying chairs or end tables to complete the room because you blew the budget on one couch.

That being said, don’t give up on the piece completely. Upholstered pieces are often priced differently based on the type of material being used, so if you love the style of the couch but can’t afford it in leather, consider using a less costly fabric in a similar color.

Keep the Size of the Room in Mind

While it’s possible to occasionally make an oversized piece work in a small room, it is always safer to have your furniture fit the scale of your room. Large dining room tables with matching china cabinets should be in a dining room that leaves enough space for guests to walk to their seats, even if the chairs are pulled out from under the table. On the other end of the spectrum, a loveseat and two armchairs shouldn’t be expected to work in an expansive great room.

Smaller rooms can be dealt with by using smaller versions of the furniture you like. For example, get a love seat instead of a full-size couch for a smaller living room. If you like the feel of smaller furniture, but have a large room, use two or three groupings of furniture to fill the space.

Know How the Furniture Will Be Used

Most people have rooms in their homes that are used more than others. Family rooms, bedrooms, and kitchens are occupied constantly, while formal living rooms and guest rooms may be used occasionally. For furniture that will be sat on frequently, opt for pieces with a sturdy frame and durable material that may cost a bit more. Many manufacturers offer fabrics that are stain-resistant or even washable. You can make up the difference on end tables and coffee tables since they don’t take as much abuse. The same goes for furniture used in a bedroom versus a guest bedroom.

Decide How Long You Want to Keep the Furniture

As with many other things, there are furniture trends that come and go and there are certain styles that have more staying power. If you enjoy changing your furniture frequently, feel free to embrace the latest trends. However, if you don’t want to replace your furniture in a few years because it looks outdated, select furniture that is more traditional and less likely to go out of style.
